2025 Winter Season
​Sydney Bears Ice Hockey Club is an affiliated club of Ice Hockey NSW, and competes in sanctioned competitions run by the association.
​
The Ice Hockey NSW Winter Season is the main season of competition for ice hockey in NSW. It runs from mid-March to late-September. Winter Season has leagues fit for all ages and skills of players.
​
There are different leagues, and in some instances grades/divisions within each league, please ensure you read the information carefully to determine which league is right for you.

JUNIOR HOCKEY:
Junior Hockey Leagues based on age groups:​​
Cross Ice / Development Format:
Mixed gender, half ice for gameplay, non-contact, no slapshots, 3 on 3 ice hockey, no stats or scores recorded.
7 to 9 Years Old, born 2016 to 2018
10 to 11 Years Old, born 2014 & 2015
Full Ice Format:
Full Ice for gameplay. Slapshots and modified checking permitted in Peewees.
Mixed gender in Squirts and Peewees.
12 to 13 Years Old, born 2012 & 2013
Full Contact Format:
Full Ice for gameplay, full contact, full scoring and stats, slapshots permitted.
Mixed gender in Bantams and Midgets.
14 to 15 Years Old, born 2010 & 2011
Pee Wees:
12 to 13 Years Old, born 2005 & 2006
16 to 18 Years Old*, born 2007, 2008 & 2009
*under the guidelines set out in the IHNSW Handbook
Non-Checking Juniors:
Full Ice for gameplay, non-checking, full scoring and stats, slapshots permitted.
Juniors
14 to 18 Years Old, born 2004 to 2008 (Males)
14 to 20 Years Old, born 2002 to 2008 (Females)
WOMENS HOCKEY:
Females of all ages and experience have multiple avenues for playing ice hockey.
Kids beginning hockey can take part in all junior league grades, and is the best option for young women starting off hockey (see above).
Females can also participate in Senior Leagues which are mixed gender, see below.
Ice Hockey NSW also has a dedicated Womens league and SBIHC has a Womens team, see details below:
Womens League
Full Ice for gameplay, non-contact, full statistics and scoring kept, slapshots permitted.
Women Open to females only, 14-years and over, Born 2011 or earlier.
SENIOR HOCKEY:
Senior B Hockey is mixed-gender & non-contact (non-deliberate checking).
All players must be already 18 years of age or over to join a Senior Hockey Team.
There are multiple divisions based on skill; Senior 1 is the highest division.
