INTRODUCTION:

Back in its third year, SBIHC, in partnership with NSA-Hockey brings you our 2019 Junior Clinics programme.​

PURPOSE:

To provide a weekly development sessions to help aid in players continual development during the offseason.  


GOAL: 

 

Identify individual strengths and weaknesses within testing and be able to leave the program with measurable improvements. Establish and build strong habits for players through a blend of basic and innovative drills that will push them out of their comfort zones and stimulate creativity.


PROGRAM OUTLINE:  

 

The core focus will be on ice hockey fundamentals of skating, puck handling, passing, shooting, battling, and game-sense. Within these pillars of development NSA will provide elite coaching and mentoring for each session.

MITES / ATOMS (4-9 YEAR OLD)

 

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS:

 

  • Kids are taught basic hockey skating, passing and shooting fundamentals.

  • Focus on practising, repeating and mastering the basics.

  • Development section to help new kids and kids that need extra development in some areas.

  • Regular cross-ice games.

DATES / TIMES:

 

Starts:    15th October 2019

 

Ends:     17th December 2019

 

Day:       Every Tuesday afternoon

 

Time:     5:15 PM to 6:00 PM*

 

*Participants must arrive at least 1-hour prior to the session beginning to get dressed and for warm-up.

 

 

 

COST: 

 

$270 (covers all 10x weeks)

SQUIRTS / PEE WEE (10-13 YEAR OLDS):

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS:

 

  • Hockey fundamentals and technical skills training.
     

  • Focus on providing measurable improvements to a player’s skill and technique over the course of the programme.
     

  • Identify weaknesses and focus on improving these areas.
     

  • Mentoring players and harnessing best skills, techniques and practices.
     

  • An experienced coaching team comprising of NSA and SBIHC coaches.

SKATING:

 

  • Posture - Athletic stance, core stability, ankle flexion, upper body control, fluid hips

  • Efficiency - Full extension, full recovery, arm swing, blade pressure, ice bite

  • Speed/Acceleration - Skating with resistance, acceleration from standstill, acceleration out of turns

  • Agility - Crossovers, linear crossovers, tight turns, punch turns, direct and transitional pivots, 

  • Power Skating - edge balance, stability, gliding, 1 foot skating, intense edge-work

 

PUCK HANDLING:

 

  • Posture - head up, chest up, weight shift

  • Hand placement - top hand control, bottom hand grip, wrist roll, 

  • Puck Control - placement on the blade, utilizing forehand and backhand, quick hands, accuracy 

 

 

PASSING:

  • Giving - sweeping motion, hand placement, open or closed blade, stick flex, give-n-go, zone passes, touch passes, saucer passes

  • Receiving - hand placement, cushioning the puck, one-touch, using the hardest part of blade, finding open ice

 

SHOOTING:

  • Posture - weight transfer, hand placement, feet/hip alignment, head up

  • Mechanics - loading the puck, follow through, release point, stick flex, puck placement on blade

  • Shot selection - how to read the goalie, high percentage shot,  power vs quickness

  • Deception - shooting in stride, fake shot, change the angle of the puck, hiding the shot, shooting off a screen

 

BATTLING/HOCKEY IQ:

 

  • Puck Retrieval - Safely going into corners, bracing for contact, deception

  • Battling - leverage, angling, contain/contact/control, pinning, escaping pressure

  • Game-sense - read and react, communication, anticipation

 

SQUIRTS / PEE WEE (10-13 YEAR OLD) CURRICULUM:


Week 1:

Testing and core skills.  Testing will include straight away speed, agility, acceleration, and transitioning.  All to be done with and without puck.


Weeks 2 – 4:

 

Core focus on skating and edgework with introduction to puck handling. Keep station drills basic as to provide good flow for the sessions. Add passing drills by week 3 at the latest. Introduction to shooting by week 4.


Weeks 5 – 6:

 

Increase the intensity and difficulty of puck handling drills and stations.  More passing added to station drills. Week 6 will be a shooting intensive hour with key focuses on having a strong base,  hip drive, and upper body mechanics.


Weeks 7 – 9:

 

Game sense training.  Puck protection and deception. Puck retrieval, 1v1, 2v1, 2v2, angling, and other game scenarios. Controlled scrimmages at the end of sessions in weeks 8 and 9


Week 10:

Testing Day - First half of the session will be devoted to performing the same testing that was done the first week of the program. Second half will be broken into small area games.

BANTAMS / MIDGET / JUNIOR

(14-17 YEAR OLDS):

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS:

 

  • Hockey fundamentals and technical skills training.

Week 2 – 3:

Core focus on fundamental skills: skating, passing, and puck handling. Keep station drills basic but high tempo.



Week 4 - 5:

Shooting intensive weeks. Week 4 will be based on stationary and small movement shooting.  Week 5 will focus on shooting in stride, and more game like scenarios with the puck.

Week 6:

Connecting the dots of weeks 2 - 5 to be able to run high tempo drills with challenging edgework, puck skills, and shooting.  



Week 7:

Body checking.  The whole day will be based around an NSA Kontact Clinic where we go over the basics of body checking.  Key focus is how to protect yourself, separate opponent from puck, and protect the puck. Controlled SAGs with contact.



Week 8 – 9:

Game sense and team play. Drills will be constructed to help players understand how to create success in game-like scenarios. I.e. Offensive zone entries, 1v1, Odd-man rushes, team defense, breaking out under pressure, navigating the ice with the puck, being an outlet for teammate, etc.



Week 10:

Testing Day - First half of the session will be devoted to performing the same testing that was done the first week of the program. Second half will be broken into small area games.
