Saturday, 20 August vs Canterbury Blackhawks at Penrith

Although the Blackhawks won the match, 9:4, the Bears didn’t make it too easy for them. Liam scored three fabulous goals; and Rasmus the other. The whole team is much more aware of strategy and the intricacies of the rules. They are all pulling together as a team as we draw to the end of the season.

Our Player of the Week today was awarded to Liam, with Jonah taking the Hustler Award.

Sunday, 7 August vs Senators at Castle Hill

A difficult match today with only seven players, ending in a defeat 1:12 Everyone worked very hard with little respite. Charlie made a spectacular goal. Ryuichi had a tremendous amount of shots on goal to contend with but made some great saves. Charlie took out the Player of the Week Award and Tom was our Hustler today. Good job!

Saturday, 6 August vs Newcastle at Penrith

What an absolutely thrill-packed match resulting in a tie with the Novocastrians. The team played tirelessly and successfully fought back from trailing 2:7 to a tied 7:7. Each side had three penalties. A great match was enjoyed by all.

Player of the Week was awarded to Rasmus, who made some fantastic saves and caught a puck mid air. The Hustler was awarded to Hayden, who played well above his skill level. Special mention is also made of James, who scored his first two goals in a match ever. Congratulations!

Thank you as well to our timekeeper, Kazuo, and scorekeeper, Mark. Their work behind the scenes is much appreciated.

Sunday, 24 July vs Canterbury Eagles at Penrith

The Eagles took the match today, 9:0, but our boys soldiered on. Player of the Week was awarded to Callum and the Hustler Award to Ethan, with both boys showing they have got what it takes. Today, the team took a little time to warm up. By the third period, they were firing on all cylinders and made nine shots on goal all up. The next plan of attack will be to fire for the whole game. Stay tuned!

Saturday/Sunday, 9 & 10 July – All Atom Tournament Newcastle

What a great weekend enjoyed by the team at the Atom Round Robin Tournament in Newcastle. All players benefited from a lot more ice time and being able to compete with so many teams. The team also had the privilege of playing alongside some of the Newcastle players, who joined the Bears for some of the matches.

The Bears gave their all which culminated in an eventual tie in the second last match with Newcastle and a victory over Canberra 2 Team. Overall, there were some great shots on goal as well as goals scored by Liam, Charlie and Max. Ryuichi and Charlie were able to showcase their goalie skills.

The weekend saw Charlie take out the Player of the Week and James the Hustler Award. Keep up the good work!

The team would like to give special thanks to Coach Linda, who mentored the team over the weekend. She did a wonderful job keeping track of everything.

Sunday, 19 June vs Saints at Penrith

The Saints took the game today with a 10:2 result, but the Bears Atoms played wonderfully against a tough competitor. The two goals scored were both assisted, which shows how well the team is playing together. Liam took the first goal with Hayden assisting. The other was right near match end by Max with Charlie assisting. Accolades all round for our great boys. Player of the Week went to Ryuichi for great goalie work. The new Hustler Award went to Charlie for making the ‘puck’ his priority. That’s what’s it all about.

The team also farewelled Coach Brian and family today, presenting him with a digital memento book and team jersey. He’s forever branded a Sydney Bear now!

Sunday, 12 June vs Senators at Canterbury

Another challenging game today, playing the strong Senators team with a 14:1 defeat. . Player of the Week was awarded to Max this time for consistency and great defence work. Max scored the one and only goal from a very tricky angle. Outstanding. You do the team proud.

Our rising sun, Ryuichi, was also exceptional this week as goalie. The referee commented on how well he had performed considering the tough opposition. There were quite a few good catches made with 35 shots on goal that had to be contended with! Well done, Ryuichi. Keep up the good work.

The team would also like to thank our volunteer parents – Trudy and Kazuo - who look after the scorekeeping and timekeeping behind the scenes. This can be very stressful at times, but it is something that is greatly appreciated. Without either of these tasks being performed, there would be no game. Thank you from the whole team.

Sunday, 5 June vs Canterbury Eagles at Canterbury

A difficult match today with four players away, resulting in a 14:0 defeat. Nevertheless, the team continues to improve in all areas. Ryuichi showed off some of his excellent defence skills and Charlie demonstrated how to out skate an opponent. As goalie this week, Shannon was able to make a few good saves despite the number of shots on goal. Special mention, however, is made of Callum for his good sportsmanship in staying with an injured player from the opposing side. This was remarked on by an official from the other team. He is to be commended for his conduct! What great Atoms we have!

This week saw James named the Player of the Week for showing marked improvement with puck handling and making a shot on goal. Well done!

The team also bids farewell to Coach Brian, and players Josh and Shannon, who will be returning to Canada soon. They will be missed greatly by the whole team. The team is expecting them to come along and watch one last game as spectators before heading off.

Sunday, 22 May vs Canterbury Blackhawks at Canterbury

This week saw the most exciting game of the season so far playing the Canterbury Blackhawks at Canterbury. It was a nail biting game, with the score virtually neck and neck until the last period. Final score 6:5. Our fantastic boys showed that ‘Bears can bite’! Well done all. Player of the Week was awarded to Liam for his continued efforts and skill. Liam has also been invited to try out for the State Pee Wees. We wish him well.

New player, Hayden, joined the team with Jersey 77. Hayden’s father, Jim, has also offered his services to assist with coaching of the Sydney Bears Atoms. Jim played ice hockey in the States some years ago. A warm welcome to both of you. Now our kids will have a coaching team with expertise from Canada, Finland and the United States.
