With three new players at the start of the season and the team needing to pull together from a group containing a mix of both first and second year Bantams players, it certainly looked like the Bears Bantams had their work cut out for them to get it all together at the start of the season. With intense training from Coach John Harvey the Bears got there and enjoyed a great start to the 2009 season with some first-up wins and good games against top-rated teams.
The improvement in the players was quite noticeable going into the middle part of the season with lines gettting organised as the kids got to know each other better. Some great attacking and defensive combinations were made from the friendships being formed and the Bears continued to develop as a team. With assistance from Kevin Knibbs and Craig Air, Coach John Harvey got the Bears working as a real team which saw them pull-off some really solid wins in the second half of the season and march on to being Finals contenders.
Then, who could forget the Bears Semi-final game !
It was ON from the start and didn't stop until the final buzzer with the Bears putting their collective all into the game with there only ever being a goal between the two teams until the last five minutes of the game. This one had every on of the edge of their seats and showed the stern stuff Bears are made of. Unfortunately, the Bears went down 4-2 in the end but can be extremely proud of their never-say-die attitude which prevailed throughout this game.
The Bears Bantams finished 12 wins / 10 losses / 2 ties for the season to finish third overall in the Season's competition.
Congratulations Bears on a great season and Semi-final appearance.

Bears Bantams V Blacktown Flyers, Sunday 22nd March 2009 @ Penrith
Whilst the overall 6-1 loss result in this first game of the season is not flattering for the Bears, it certainly does not tell the full tale of this game which was only 2-1 the Flyers way at the end of the second period.
The Bears certainly started the game well, going toe-to-toe with the Flyers in both attack and defence. The Flyers managed to put one away at the 4 minute mark with the Bears responding shortly thereafter with determined, scrapping play at the net from TJ, Ryan and Saxon seeing the goal eventually landed off the stick of Mackay. Great defensive play from Remi, Pat and Cian saw the scored held at 1 all at the end of the first.
The second was more of the same with some great attacking runs from Max and Jamie and with newcomers Yucca, Kameron and Mitch also giving it their all. Mike worked his usual miracles in the net seeing only 1 goal get in for the period ending 2-1 the Flyers way.
The Bears started to tire in the third but still managed to provide some spark with Danni always letting the Flyers know she was around! Unfortunately, this period saw the more experienced Flyers team take control of the match scoring four goals to finish the match at 6-1 to the Flyers.
Take heart Bears, this was a good game from a younger team with 3 new players.
Keep training hard - this has all the hallmarks of a great team !
