The club was incorporated in 1982 as the Macquarie Bears, but with the possible future of a national League and being included in international tournaments, the club changed in 1997 to be known as “The Sydney Bears”.
The Sydney Bears Ice Hockey Club is over 26 years old starting in with two teams and presently has six. In 2007, the junior club separated from the senior AIHL team, but maintains close ties with the AIHL Bears. This association provides the opportunity for our junior players to move into a semi-professional league in the Australian Ice Hockey League.
The continuing success of the club lies in its members, and the growth of the development program shows the future is very bright for the Sydney bears. The club has always found a place for any beginner to take the sport of ice hockey as it can be enjoyed by all ages. The different grades are continually impressed by the standard of players being produced by the development program and ensure a consistently high standard teams in all grades.
The aims of the club are to be competitive, to develop players of all ages, to promote the sport of ice hockey and to have fun, enjoy and cater for recreational players in the Junior and Senior Divisions as well as promoting a Development League at the Macquarie Ice Rink. While winning is certainly a goal for us, our club will always place greatest importance on the pleasure that comes from learning more about this wonderful sport, being part of a great club and from enjoying the company of fellow members and their friends.
The Sydney Bears Ice Hockey Club is a non-profit incorporated association. The Club Executive and game officials are all volunteers - you can volunteer too!
Ice Hockey is one of the fastest sports in the world and we cater for all ages. Ice Hockey is a great way to get fit, make friends and learn to work within a team.
Feel free to come down and watch our future hockey stars sweat it out at a training session at the Macquarie Ice Rink(in season) any Tuesday night after 5.30pm or, even better, watch them in action in a competition game.
If you wish to try your hand at ice hockey to see if you like the challenges that the game provides, the club offers a development league for new and experience players.
Ice hockey as a sport has grown in popularity all over Australia; the main challenges remain finding ice time at public rinks and finding good qualified coaches.
Various sponsorship opportunities exist for company’s to become involved with the Sydney Bears Ice Hockey Club. These include sponsorship of junior teams, the development league, training camps and other special events. All of which provide excellent exposure for your company as well as contributing to youth development and to the game of ice hockey in Australia.
